Villa's golden midfielder; views.

BRIAN Sigston's meeting with his Aston Villa hero Alex Cropley (Mail, July 25) reminds me of an occasion in Glasgow when several sportswriters were among hundreds of guests at a function called to honour Scotland's greatest ever footballer, Denis Law.

During a lull in proceedings talk turned to other talented Scottish footballers, the injury-ravaged career of Alex Cropley was mentioned and the comment was made: "Alex was a man of marked contrast... a demon on the field yet so shy and retiring off it."

There can seldom have been a more apt observation. Alex Copley, during four golden glorious seasons, was indisputably Villa's best ever midfield player.
