Victorious Laird's sail on; West Cheshire League - Champions five points ahead.

Byline: ERNIE McDONALD

THE CAMMELL Laird bandwagon continues to roll in the Carlsberg West Cheshire League's first division, emphasised by successive victories over Newton and Mersey Royal which sees the reigning champions already five points clear at the top of the table.

Chris McGinn was a two-goal star in Wednesday's 3-0 eclipse of Newton while two own goals proved the difference in Saturday's 4-1 triumph against Royal, Ian Doran and Alan Macdonald also scoring.

Liverpool outfit Maghull are running into form following 4-0 and 1-0 wins over Aintree Villa and Christleton which have elevated them into fifth place.

Neighbours Manweb are also holding their own after a 3-2 win at General Chemicals and a hard-fought draw with third-placed Helsby.

Kevin Coakley was Ashville's hotshot in his side's 1-1 draw with Poulton Victoria, who on Saturday went down 2-0 at home to Pickering Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Challenge Vase.

Stork suffered 2-1 defeats twice in a week to Mersey Royal and General Chemicals, who celebrated their first win of the season thanks to goals from Robert Moore and Paul Howard.

Elsewhere a John Roberts penalty failed to stop Heswall from crashing 6-1 at home to Shell.

West Kirby's exciting young side are making waves in Division Two and following successive wins over New Brighton and Mersey Royal Res, they have risen to third place in the table.

Promoted Manor Athletic are finding the going tough however and currently occupy bottom spot with just one victory to their credit.

Last Monday saw them fall to goals from Cammell Laird's reserves' Paul Finnan and Chris Goodall, while on Saturday it was Christleton Res' chance to turn the screw, Woodward, Fenlon and Parry obliging in the 3-0 win.

Mallaby moved into second place in the table by beating Merseyside Police 7-1 last Monday, but Saturday's 3-1 eclipse of Castrol Social was soured after full-back Colin Moffatt sustained a broken leg, just three minutes into the game.

Poulton Vics Res made headway thanks to Wednesday's 3-2 result over Wallasey neighbours Ashville Res and a fine 3-1 result over Heswall Res at the weekend.

New Brighton's superb 1-0 win over former leaders Upton AA on Saturday was confirmed by a goal from Ian Astles, but Ashville Res' relegation fears continued to grow following a 4-1 reversal at fifth-placed Pavalions.

FC Pensby are riding high in Division Three after last Wednesday's 5-0 rout of rivals Shaftesbury which saw goals from Carl Tatler (3), Matt Irvine and Paul Wigfield.

They are now withing striking distance of leaders Grange Athletic.

At the weekend Pensby reached the second round of the West Cheshire Shield, Darren Toale scoring two in the 3-0 success against Capenhurst Villa Res.

A Kevin Murray effort sent New Brighton Res through at the expense of Mond Rangers Res, while four-goal Gareth Owen stole the show as Shaftesbury demolished West Kirby Res 7-0.

It was curtains for Newton Res, beaten 2-0 by Helsby Res, and Stork Res dipped 11-2 to Chester raiders St Werburgh's.

Willaston lived to fight another day after Saturday's 1-1 nailbiter with Aintree Villa Res, Colin Jones finding the net.
