Victoria Ward, Limited: Honolulu shopping mecca gears up for more expansions. (Real Estate).
With more than 600,000-square feet of shopping, restaurants, and entertainment, it appeared that Victoria Ward, Limited had completed its growth and evolution, which began seven years ago. But, the Honolulu-owned shopping mecca is gearing up for another round of expansions.
Construction is already underway at Ward Centre as it prepares to welcome its new anchor tenant, Nordstrom Shoes, scheduled to open this June.
"Nordstrom Shoes will not only increase overall traffic to Ward Centre, but it will also benefit all of the tenants at Ward," said Leslie Brown, Director of Leasing for Victoria Ward, Limited. "We're bringing in national tenants to coincide with our local tenants. That's the tenant mix that works."
This strategy may soon include a main Nordstrom department store -- the first in Hawaii -- at Ward. Nordstrom has already signed a letter of intent with Victoria Ward, Limited to build a multi-level, 150,000-square foot department store, expected to open in 2005.
Ward just welcomed the opening of its new 156,000-square foot entertainment center, anchored by Consolidated's 16-plex theater and Dave & Buster's sports bar and restaurant. The entertainment center, now 100 percent leased, includes national restaurants Buca di Beppo, Gaucho Grill, and Wolfgang Puck Express, mixed with local specialty stores such as Pink C and Quiksilver Youth.
Melisa Preus, Leasing Agent for Victoria Ward, Limited, says the addition of national names, including the proposed opening of Nordstrom department store, serves to benefit all facets of the local community, and complements the locally-owned specialty stores, which Preus says is one of the shopping center's major strengths.
"Our research is based on what the local customer wants," Preus said. "The local community is a very important focus in all of our decisions. They are our primary customer base."
Brown adds that the new entertainment center has spurred excitement and led to a shift in Ward's customer demographics.
"Prior to the opening of the entertainment center, most customers were from the Honolulu and East Honolulu areas," Brown said. "Now we have visitors coming from all over the island, in addition to the Japanese and westbound visitors."
With the increase in customer traffic, comes the natural question of parking. "There is ample parking available in all buildings," Brown said. "And additional parking spaces open up in several buildings after hours."
