Vicar, 57, beaten in faith rage.

A VICAR was viciously beaten outside his church in a suspected "faith-hate" attack.

Canon Michael Ainsworth, 57, had gone into the churchyard to ask three Asian youths to keep the noise down when they set upon him.

Two allegedly attacked him while shouting insults about his job.

He was in hospital last night with cuts, bruises and two black eyes.

Police were called by a passer-by, who found him covered in blood outside St George-in-the-East Church in Stepney, East London. Police said: "The incident is being investigated as an alleged faith-hate crime."

Mr Ainsworth's wife, Janina, is the Church of England's first woman chief education officer.
