Veterans' committee created; Board OK's summer meeting schedule.

Byline: Sandy Meindersma

HOLDEN - The Board of Selectmen unanimously voted to establish a Veterans' Advisory Committee, as proposed by selectman Anthony Renzoni, at its meeting June 3.

Mr. Renzoni, who is a veteran, said the American Legion has been the veterans' service organization in town, but that participation is low. In addition, Ken Starbard, who decorates the veterans' graves, is no longer able to do so.

"I really think it's time this town does this," Mr. Renzoni said.

Mr. Renzoni said the committee would advise the town on matters that affect and are important to veterans. The committee will have five to nine members, and a formal charge for the committee will be established at the July 15 meeting.

In other business, the board congratulated Emily Westerback, Montachusett Regional Vocational High School class of 2013 valedictorian, on her many accomplishments, which include being named the school's outstanding vocational student of the year.

The board also set its summer meeting schedule, and agreed to meet July 15 and Aug. 12; both meetings will be held in the senior center, which is air-conditioned.
