Veterans' Affairs Committee approves pending legislation. (Government Relations).

On May 15, the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs (HCVA) marked up an extensive list of pending legislation that included several benefits and healthcare-related measures. Approved were H.R. 1460, the Veterans Entrepreneurship and Benefits Improvement Act; H.R. 1683, the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act; H.R. 1257, the Selected Reserve Home Loan Equity Act; H.R. 1562, the Veterans Health Care Cost Recovery Act; H.R. 1715, a bill to enhance the authority of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to recover costs from third parties for medical care provided to veterans; and H.R. 1911, a bill to enhance cooperation between VA and the Department of Defense.

PVA previously testified in support of H.R. 1460. The proposed legislation authorizes a state agency to approve entrepreneurship courses for attendance by veterans using veterans' basic educational assistance provided through VA. It also authorizes any person entitled to a veterans' rehabilitation program to establish self-employment as a vocational goal. Finally, it would amend the Small Business Act to authorize a federal contracting officer to award a sole source contract to any small business owned and controlled by service-disabled veterans.

The approval of H.R. 1683, the Veterans Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act, is also important to PVA. It would increase the rates of compensation paid to service-connected veterans with disabilities and the rates of dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC) paid to surviving spouses.
