Vertigo adopts ThinkFish non-photorealistic 3D renderer in leading Photoshop plug-in; Vertigo 3D Dizzy and ThinkFish LiveStyles bridge gap between 3D graphics and 2D desktop publishing world.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1997--ThinkFish Productions, Inc. today announced it has licensed its 3D artistic rendering technology, LiveStyles(TM), to Vertigo Technology, Inc. (Vancouver, British Columbia).

Through this agreement, LiveStyles will be included as a new rendering option within Vertigo 3D Dizzy(TM) version 1.0, plug-in for putting 3D models into Adobe PhotoShop(TM). Vertigo 3D Dizzy 1.0 is available immediately at a retail price of $99.95. Vertigo is the third leading graphics software company, following Fractal Design Corporation (Scotts Valley, CA) and Apple Computer, Inc. (Cupertino, CA), to license LiveStyles technology from ThinkFish Productions.

LiveStyles is an intelligent rendering technology based on concepts originally developed at the MIT Media Lab by ThinkFish founder, Rolf Rando. LiveStyles views a 3D object and draws the key lines and strokes in user-selectable fine art motifs, such as Sketch and Toon. LiveStyles represents a radical departure from standard photorealistic 3D rendering. It is the first technology in the trend towards real-time NPR (non-photorealistic rendering) 3D.

Vertigo 3D Dizzy 1.0 will ship with five ThinkFish styles free of charge -- three bundled with the software and two available for download from the company's Web site ( Users will also be able to obtain additional styles directly from the ThinkFish Web site for $24.95 per style or $59.95 for a full family of styles (includes 5-7 styles).

"ThinkFish LiveStyles and Vertigo 3D Dizzy -- this combination brings to Photoshop users a whole new level of cutting-edge, affordable 3D style options," said Rob Glidden, principal analyst with Quadramix, a leading media technology research firm. "ThinkFish and Vertigo are breaking the elitist mold of high-priced 3D renderers, and Photoshop users will be delighted with the new-look image styles that ThinkFish and Vertigo are making easy and affordable."

"Now that LiveStyles technology is included in Vertigo 3D Dizzy, one of the most enticing new Photoshop plug-ins, the extensive base of Photoshop users now has the ability to render 3D models using our non-photorealistic styles," said Ben Wen, President of ThinkFish Productions, Inc. "ThinkFish and Vertigo have taken a big step in the industry to truly integrate conventional 2D desktop publishing with 3D graphics technologies."

"The ThinkFish LiveStyles renderer makes an artist out of the 3D user," said James D. Stewart, President and CEO of Vertigo Technology, Inc. "Vertigo 3D Dizzy and ThinkFish LiveStyles now give designers tools to develop non-realistic 3D scenes that add creative stamp to their work -- something difficult to do when you are living in the photo-realistic world."

LiveStyles Overview:

LiveStyles gives users access to a library of artistic or cartoon motifs, known as "Styles" which are dramatically different from the traditional, photo-realistic style of rendering. These styles can be applied to models as easily as choosing a font. ThinkFish will release an expanding collection of LiveStyles that will be available either in families or individually, as fonts are available for desktop publishing. Styles will range from Picasso to manga, from Klee to cartoon.

To enable LiveStyles content, software vendors must license the LiveStyles Authoring Engine for their application. Tool companies license this technology directly from ThinkFish.

Uses of LiveStyles:

-- Give a 2D artistic look to 3D models in a variety of

-- Create living art/living cartoons

-- Create real-time models for distribution either directly or

via the web

-- Create real-time animation for either direct playback or via

the web
