Byline: Submitted by Al Dorfman
A Helping Community is the theme of the second Vernon Township Mental Health Fair.
One in five adults and teenagers will experience a mental health crisis. In addition, approximately 40 percent of the adults experiencing a mental health crisis will not receive any type of help, according to National Institutes of Health statistics. Furthermore, Lake County had 60 suicides in 2015.
Vernon Township trustees, Kol Hadash's Community Service Committee, and the National Alliance of Mental Illness Lake County and Barrington chapters are sponsoring a Mental Health Fair from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, at the Vernon Township Community Building, 2900 N. Main St., Buffalo Grove.
There will be approximately 20 community groups represented at this free event, including legal, social and vocational organizations. One of the groups is Soul Harbor Ranch, which will bring their therapy ponies and service animals. Also, representatives from State Representative Didech and congressman Brad Schneider will be present as well.
For those currently dealing with a mental illness, there will be agencies that can offer treatment alternatives. For the public at large, the Mental Health Fair is an informative way to present the available mental health services.
