Provider of broadband and other wireless and wireline communications services Verizon Communications (Nasdaq:VZ)(NYSE:VZ) said on Friday that William R. Roberts, Verizon's regional president for Maryland and Washington DC, has announced that he will retire at the end of the year.

Roberts has completed 31 years of service with Verizon.

Roberts was named region president for Verizon Maryland and Verizon Washington DC in December 2007. He serves as a board member of the Federal City Council, Greater Baltimore Committee, Greater Washington Board of Trade, Kennedy-Krieger Institute and MedStar Health. He also serves on the Morgan State University Board of Regents.

The company said that organisational changes resulting from Roberts' retirement will be determined at a later date.
