TELECOMWORLDWIRE-16 August 2006-Verizon Wireless launches wireless broadband network in Southwest Florida(C)1994-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

A wireless broadband network has been launched in the main areas of Charlotte, Lee and Sarasota counties of Southwest Florida, in the US, by Verizon Wireless, a wireless network operator and joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE and LSE:VOD).

The upgrade will strengthen the network in the event of emergencies and enable its customers in Southwest Florida to use wireless phones, laptops and other wireless devices for high-speed business and entertainment services.

Verizon Wireless installed high-tech wireless hardware and software in numerous wireless transmission sites in the area for the expansion, extending its BroadbandAccess network from Sarasota to Fort Myers. Customers can connect wirelessly to the Internet with average 400-700kb/s connection speeds and also access the Verizon Wireless V CAST service for downloadable music, short video content and 3D games.

The operator has completed the upgrades for the network and tested the system and is now enabling an extra 1m residents in the area to gain from the wireless broadband service. It also plans to introduce the service to Collier and Manatee counties within 30 days, as part of its multimillion dollar expansion into Southwest Florida, which it said is a fast-growing market.
