Ventilation control in parking garage systems.

Ventilation control in parking garage systems

Building codes require one of two systems to protect people from carbon monoxide gas in enclosed parking garages. Operators can either run exhaust fans continuously, or install an automatic carbon monoxide detector and controller such as Macurco's CM-1-ND. Typically, the use of an automatic system reduces the run time of exhaust fans to less than one hour a day. Savings are much greater if heating is required in the garage. Given the variables of installation, existing equipment, heating, traffic, etc., gross payback on an automatic control system including the CM-1-ND will vary between four and 18 months.

The CM-1-ND is a solid state electronic device that uses a microcomputer and sensor. The sensor identifies the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) and the microcomputer calculates the "CO exposure" which is a combination of both time and ppm levels of the gas. Conventional detectors only alarm at one or two ppm levels. The CM-1-ND provides warnings at all "CO exposure" levels.
