Veggie diet will not harm catch.
FOOD experts are spending pounds 2m in a bid to turn fish into vegetarians.
Boffins at Aberdeen University are hoping to brainwash giant fish-farm salmon and trout into swapping their fish diet for a more politically correct veggie alternative.
And they reckon the new menu will fatten the fish just as well as before.
The new research study has been launched in a bid to protect the fragile Scottish fishing industry.
Current fish-farming methods use a diet of fish- meal produced from North Sea catches.
But dwindling stocks mean new ways of fattening up salmon and trout must be found.
Prof Dominic Houlihan, who is leading the study, said: "The number of fish we can get from the sea is limited, but everyone agrees that we should have more fish farming as a way of producing more food for the world's population.
"The obvious answer, therefore, is not to use fishmeal but other sources to feed the fish.
"Our project will investigate the possibilities of using cereals, or other products.
"This in turn will lead to the possibility of using corns as feeds for new species that may be cultured, such as cod."
