Vegetarianism helps fight climate change; YOUR LETTERS TO THE NATIONAL NEWSPAPER OF WALES.

* SIR - The other night I attended the hustings organised by Friends of The Earth in Monmouth with the four main party candidates for the forthcoming Assembly election on the platform.

All the speakers were passionate in their dedication to fighting climate change through reducing global warming and there was the standard support paid to the obvious and publicly supported remedies such as simpler packaging, waste recycling, abandonment of sell-by dates (except for meat!), solar panels and so on.

I asked the question from the floor: "What about encouraging people to become vegetarian?" There was an ominous silence and no-one responded. With a shrug and not a word the chairman pointed to another raised hand.

I was left wondering if any of these people were really serious about combating global warming or about the other adverse affects of meat-eating? We don't need to eat meat and we would probably be healthier without it. Apparently cows are as bad for the environment as cars and I gather that the cereals fed to animals would go a long way towards relieving the starving people of the world. The cruelty of the proposed killing of badgers and of factory farming were mentioned but surely both of these would be unnecessary if more people were vegetarian.

I did not expect enthusiastic support for this aspect of improving the world but to totally ignore it seems to be extremely silly - even cowardly. But then, they were politicians! STEPHEN CLARKE Monmouth
