Vegas Vic? One stop on the tour.

Beneath the surface glitz of modern Las Vegas lies, well, mostly the surface glitz of past Las Vegas. The Preservation Association of Clark County has put together a pamphlet, A Guide to Historic Las Vegas, that leads visitors through a hundred years of city history It starts with an 1855 Mormon fort and ends with Vegas Vic, one of the best known neon signs.

Most sites lie within walking distance of downtown. A few attractions-notably the Las Vegas Mormon Fort-are best reached by car. (The fort, at 908 Las Vegas Boulevard N., is open 10 to 4 Mondays and Saturdays, I to 4 Sundays.)

Some blocks are down-at-heels, and a few of the historic buildings have been modernized. But you'll spot many gems: the cluster of early 1900s railroad cottages on Casino Center Boulevard; the superb art deco Las Vegas High School, at 315 S. Seventh Street; and that jaunty casino cowboy, Vegas Vic himself, a downtown VIP at 25 E. Fremont Street. If you're feeling amorous and perhaps impulsive make tracks to the Hitching Post Wedding Chapel, 226 Las Vegas Boulevard S., the earliest (1934) example of an indigenous Las Vegas industry.

Pick up the free pamphlet at the Nevada State Museum; admission is $1, but there's no charge if you're just getting the pamphlet. The museum is at 700 Twin Lakes Drive; it's open 11:30 to 4:30 Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:30 to 4:30 Wednesdays through Sundays.
