Vaughan Williams, Ralph: Hymns of Vaughan Williams.

Vaughan Williams, Ralph: Hymns of Vaughan Williams. Choir of the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, directed by Thomas Somerville, with Frederick Swann, organ. Recorded ca. 2000, at the church. Engineer: Joe Bellamy. 69+ minutes. Gothic 49121. This is one of the very best choral recordings you are likely to hear. The soundstaging, depth, detail, and spaciousness is just like what one would hear in a real church, at least from up front. Regarding "up front," the sense of depth is such that the two-channel material is almost surround-sound like (not quite, but almost), and the organ blend is sonically perfect.

Virtually all the standard surround modes I tried with my Yamaha processor were spectacular: DPL, DPL "enhanced," assorted halls, church, and of course, my favorite, Classical/Opera. With the latter, as well as the DPL modes, backing off the center the usual -3 dB minimized center collapse, while at the same time solidifying and stabilizing the soundstage for off-axis listening. --HF
