Varieties of antisemitism; history, ideology, discourse.

Ed. by Murray Baumgarten et al.

Univ. of Delaware Press

399 pages

Presented by Baumgarten, Kenez, and Thompson (all of the U. of California at Santa Cruz), 23 papers provide new interpretations of anti-Semitism in history. Opening papers "rethink" the Holocaust, discussing such topics as blood and the discourses of Nazi anti-Semitism; regional aspects of the Holocaust in Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia; the attitude of the Polish Home Army towards Jews during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, and Jewish resistance and Soviet internationalism in Minsk during the Second World War. Regional studies of anti-Semitism are then presented looking at cases from Poland, Hungary, Russia, and South Africa. Finally, contemporary anti-Semitism after the Holocaust is discussed in papers exploring the "new" anti-Semitism in France, prejudice and political culture in the Islamic Near East, anti-Semitism and Islamic fundamentalism, and other topics.
