Value Added Resellers Adopt StorageTek's Vision for "Open, Intelligent and Integrated" Storage Area Networks.

LOUISVILLE, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 1999--

Interoperable Components, Solutions-Oriented Framework Provide

Opportunities For StorageTek VARs To Capitalize On Exploding SAN

Market

StorageTek(R) (Storage Technology Corp.; NYSE: STK), the preeminent provider of network storage, today announced that more than 10 value-added resellers (VARs) have signed up to sell, service and support StorageTek's StorageNet(R) line of storage networking products. The Fibre Channel and SCSI-based devices are the building blocks for StorageTek's vision of "Open, Intelligent and Integrated"(TM) storage area networks (SANs).

StorageTek's current list of U.S.-based SAN resellers include: Box Hill Systems Corp., Cranel Inc., Datalink Corp., Forsythe Solutions Group, Integrated Archive Systems (IAS), Midrange Computer Solutions, Inc. (MCSI), MTI Technology Corp., PDC Solutions, Inc., RCI, and Vangard Technology, Inc. Access Graphics has signed on as a StorageTek Value Added Distributor (VAD) (see separate release issued today).

While other SAN vendors continue to advocate proprietary server- or disk-controlled architectures, StorageTek is driving a new paradigm that will deliver universal data access through open and intelligent storage networks. StorageTek's Virtual Intelligent Storage Architecture (VISTA) framework distributes intelligence in the SAN itself so that customers are assured of greater scalability, manageability and reliability. This is embodied in the StorageNet line, driving down the total cost of ownership for storage while allowing customers to embrace new technologies as the need arises.

"Most customers find their traditional server-captive storage systems expensive, restrictive and difficult to manage," said Joan Wrabetz, StorageTek vice president and general manager, SAN Operations. "Together with our channel partners, StorageTek products, services and interoperability testing are combined to deliver open and integrated SAN solutions that work."

StorageTek Channel Benefits from Current, Future Offerings

StorageTek's StorageNet family of Fibre Channel SAN connectivity products includes: Fibre Channel Hub 1000, Fibre Channel Bridge 3100, Fibre Channel Switch 4000 and Access Hub.

Access Hub provides the unique capability for customers to create open SANs that take advantage of a multiple loop architecture that is easily managed with a Web-based user interface. Access Hub addresses the ever-increasing customer needs for deploying intelligent SANs that meet the business requirements of automated tape sharing, server clustering and remote disaster recovery. StorageTek has integrated SAN building blocks to create turnkey solutions that address particular customer requirements such as: LANfree(TM) Backup, Dynamic Storage Allocation and Business Continuance Service. Finally, the SCSI Mux and SCSI Extender products fulfill StorageTek's offering to address the need for traditional SCSI storage networking.

Through its interoperability lab and StorageNet Certified program, StorageTek provides complete system- and solution-level interoperability testing for all of its StorageNet connectivity and tape and disk storage products.

Midrange Computer Solutions Inc., with locations across the country, is a VAR of storage and system products for the UNIX(R), Windows NT and IBM AS/400 markets. "MCSI believes that the architecture of SANs offers companies increased performance, reduced costs and improved manageability," said Lodi Vercelli, MCSI president. "We feel that StorageTek's unique ability to develop and manufacture all elements of a SAN, including switches, disk and automated tape libraries, allows us to offer our customers an integrated solution coupled with proven reliability. Our customers understand the value of SANs and are beginning to implement Fibre-ready disk products from StorageTek as a first step to deploying SANs throughout their enterprises."

StorageTek's recently announced SANaps(TM) turnkey SAN application suites are designed by StorageTek to remove the risk and guesswork from implementing and managing SANs. In the second half of 1999, StorageTek intends to offer a marketing partner certification program that will allow qualified VARs to sell, service and support LANfree Backup and other forthcoming SANaps bundled solutions. StorageTek's marketing partners will, in turn, benefit from StorageTek's extensive investment in testing and certification of its best-of-breed SAN applications. These applications include: storage management software from StorageTek or other leading independent software vendors (ISVs); StorageTek tape and/or disk hardware; StorageNet connectivity devices and Fibre Channel adapters; and professional services and worldwide support.
