VULCAN PROCEEDING WITH POTASSIUM CARBONATE DEVELOPMENT

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Vulcan Chemicals, a division of Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC), announced today that it is proceeding with development of a project to produce potassium carbonate at its Port Edwards, Wis., chloralkali manufacturing facility.
According to Robert Wason, Vulcan's executive vice president for Business Development, preliminary evaluations of markets and capital costs regarding the project have been favorable. The project would include an expansion of Vulcan's potassium hydroxide production capacity.
The Birmingham-based company is currently developing plans for a new plant design along with a definitive capital cost estimate, with the intention of having a potassium carbonate manufacturing plant in operation at the Port Edwards facility by the fourth quarter of next year.
"Production of potassium carbonate is a good fit for Vulcan since we are basic in potassium hydroxide, the principle raw material," said Wason. "We have completed a strategic review of our businesses in 1992, and one of the objectives of our alkali strategy is to move downstream into growing potassium chemicals. We intend to expand our potassium hydroxide production capacity so that we can continue to serve the increasing needs of our customers."
