VULCAN CHEMICALS EARNS ISO REGISTRATIONS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Quality processes for six products manufactured at Vulcan Chemicals facilities in Geismar, La., and Wichita, Kan., have received ISO 9002 registration -- the world's standard for quality assurance.
The ISO registrations are for quality assurance systems used to manufacture methyl chloride, methylene chloride and chloroform at Wichita and methyl chloride, ethylene dichloride and 111-trichloroethane at Geismar. In addition to the manufacturing sites, Vulcan's division headquarters in Birmingham was registered.
The ISO 9000 international quality assurance standards are recognized by business and industry in the United States, the European Community and many other nations. Achieving ISO registration means that the processes involved in manufacturing products or providing services meet the strict standards established under the ISO certification system. Many companies prefer doing business with suppliers registered under the ISO 9000 standards, which are fast becoming an industry requirement. ISO 9002 -- the standard to which Vulcan registered -- most closely applies to chemical manufacturing.
In order to be ISO-registered, each manufacturing process must be audited by an independent auditor. Vulcan's ISO registration was completed by Quality Management Institute (QMI), a division of Canadian Standards Association, an internationally recognized quality assurance registrar. Vulcan initiated ISO registration procedures in 1991. ISO registration was achieved for Wichita and Geismar in November 1992 and for Birmingham in December 1992.
"These ISO certifications place Vulcan in an enhanced competitive position in worldwide and domestic markets," said Mike Ferris, Vulcan Chemicals' president. "Vulcan customers and potential customers around the world will be assured that our ISO-registered products are manufactured to meet the highest standards possible. We are also in the process of obtaining ISO registration for our other Vulcan products, including those manufactured at our Port Edwards, Wisconsin, plant."
Steve Holly, Vulcan's manager of Quality Assurance, said the ISO registration procedure involves a company-wide effort that is in keeping with Vulcan's Total Quality Commitment process.
"In preparing for the ISO audit we found a number of areas in which quality procedures could be improved and standardized. The changes we implemented resulted in quality improvements and made the considerable resources we dedicated to this project well worth the effort," Holly said.
The ISO system was established by the International Organization for Standardization and is used to provide a framework for quality assurance. The system involves a standardized protocol for documenting the quality systems employed in manufacturing products or providing services. The ISO registration does not involve the actual product, rather the quality system employed in manufacturing the product.
