VULCAN CHEMICALS AND TETRA TECHNOLOGIES CELEBRATE START UP OF RECYCLING FACILITY

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Vulcan Chemicals, along with TETRA Technologies, celebrated today the completed construction and start up of a new calcium chloride facility at its Wichita, Kan. chemical manufacturing complex.
The new facility will produce commercial grade calcium chloride from various process by-product and co-product hydrochloric acid streams.
The hydrochloric acid streams now used in making the calcium chloride had previously been disposed of in Vulcan's EPA-Approved deep well disposal system.
"We found a way to dramatically reduce the amount of waste disposed of in our deep wells and also produce a saleable product," said Paul Tobia, Vulcan's Wichita plant manager. Overall, as a result of this and other pollution prevention measures, Vulcan Chemicals will reduce its emissions 90 percent by 1995 from 1987 levels.
Earlier this year Vulcan reached an agreement with TETRA Technologies to design and build the facility. TETRA is now marketing the product through an extensive distribution network.
Top management from Vulcan and TETRA toured the new plant today as part of the facility's grand opening.
Calcium chloride has a multitude of beneficial uses including de-icing of roads, dust control, road stabilization and oil well completion.
