VSDA LAUNCHES VIDEO STORE VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE
MOORESTOWN, N.J., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Now registering to vote

can be as easy as renting a movie: voter registration information and materials are available in more than 5,000 video stores nationwide through the Video Store Voter Registration Drive (VSDA), a major, non-partisan voter registration campaign recently launched by the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) to combat voter complacency.
At least one-third of eligible U.S. citizens -- 70 million people, are not registered to vote. The campaign is the first national voter registration effort targeting familiar neighborhood locations such as video stores to reach potential voters. VSDA is providing members with countertop displays that hold registration forms for states that allow registration by mail, and instructions about how to register for states that prohibit mail-in registration.
"The Video Store Voter Registration Drive is a way for our industry to promote one of the most important aspects of democracy -- voting," said VSDA national board member Mitch Lowe, who pioneered the 1990 California registration drive that served as a model for the VSDA effort.
Lowe, the owner of a Mill Valley, Calif., video store, joined Mitch Braff, a San Francisco-based film producer, to work with the California Office of Elections and the state's Democratic and Republican parties to place nearly 400 counter displays in independent video stores and chain outlets. As a result, more than 15,000 voter registration forms were distributed.
The Video Store Voter Registration Drive is supported by public service announcements featuring Martin Sheen, Morgan Fairchild, Spiderman and Orville Redenbacher. The campaign has been endorsed by the League of Women Voters, Vote America, Rock the Vote, the National Association of Secretaries of State, federal and state legislators, both the Democratic and Republican parties, major media and a number of sports and entertainment celebrities.
VSDA is a not-for-profit international trade association with a membership exceeding 4,500 companies, representing 25,000 retail locations. Member companies include retailers as well as manufacturers, distributors and related businesses that constitute the home video industry.
