VOLVO WAGONS NAMED BEST OVERALL VALUE

ROCKLEIGH, N.J., March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Volvo 240 wagon and the Volvo 940 Turbo wagon were each named the "best overall value" in their respective classes in the 1993 edition of "The Complete Car Cost Guide." Adding to the significance of this recognition is the fact that the Volvo 240 wagon has won this recognition for the past six years in a row, every year since the categories were established. According to Mats Ola Palm, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, Inc., this recognition will mean a lot for prospective Volvo customers.
"People who consider Volvos are very careful shoppers and do a lot of research," Palm explained. "They expect safety engineering, durability, and value. `The Complete Car Cost Guide' is a respected third party reference which helps consumers make an informed purchase decision."
No other wagon has been recognized as the "best overall value" in its class six times in a row. This unique accomplishment for Volvo's venerable 240 wagon becomes even more impressive when one realizes that 1993 is the last year of production for this model which was first introduced in 1975. Not many cars win such recognition at the end of an 18 year product cycle.
"The Complete Car Cost Guide," which is now in its seventh edition, was conceived by Peter Levy, president of IntelliChoice, Inc., based in San Jose, Calif. Mr. Levy wanted to develop a database which would allow car shoppers to look at more than just the price of a new car. His well developed system now includes, depreciation, maintenance and repair expenses, insurance costs, fuel economy, and variety of other factors. Armed with this huge compilation of data, a customer can easily evaluate what a specific model car is likely to cost over its lifetime as opposed to its purchase price.
Most libraries have "The Complete Car Cost Guide" in their reference collection. Copies may be ordered directly from IntelliChoice for $45 (plus $4 for handling) by dialing 1-800-CAR-BOOK.
Each year in conjunction with the publication of the Guide's annual edition, awards are made for the best overall value in 15 new passenger car classes. The 1993 edition of the Guide recognized the Volvo 240 wagon as having the best overall value in the class for Compact Wagons Over $15,000. The 940 Turbo wagon took top honors for Midsize Wagons Over $20,000. Wagons account for nearly one-third of Volvo's annual U.S. sales of approximately 70,000 cars.
