VOLVO RECEIVES EPA AWARD FOR CFC-FREE AIR CONDITIONING RETROFIT KIT

ROCKLEIGH, N.J., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- At the EPA International CFC and Halon Alternatives Conference, held Oct. 21 in Washington, Volvo Cars of North America received an award for its air conditioning retrofit kit. Volvo was one of 78 individuals and organizations from 11 countries to receive this honor in recognition of exemplary efforts to protect the ozone layer. The kit allows existing R12 air conditioning systems to be converted to the new environmentally friendly R134a refrigerant. In the spring of 1993, Volvo became the first car manufacturer in the world to offer a conversion kit for air conditioning systems in older model cars, making it possible to use the non-ozone depleting refrigerant.
"The EPA Stratospheric Protection Awards recognize corporations that have demonstrated exceptional leadership, personal dedication and technical achievements in eliminating ozone-depleting substances," said Paul Stolpman, EPA's acting director of the Office of Atmospheric Programs. "I congratulate them for setting a standard of environmental excellence and for inspiring others to strive to protect the earth for future generations."
The Volvo retrofit kit, which was developed in Sweden by Volvo engineers Urban Cagius, Hans Fernquist and Per Henriksson, currently fits Volvo 740, 760 and 940 models from 1985 to 1992. Additional kits are being developed to fit other Volvo models. The retrofit procedure calls for the replacement of a small number of easily accessible components in the air conditioning system and uses ester oil as the lubricant in the compressor. The manufacturer's suggested retail price on the kit is $45 and the estimated installation time is approximately two hours, given that the car's air conditioning system is in good working order.
President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, Mats Ola Palm, noted, "I am proud of the contribution the Volvo organization has made in the area of CFC reduction. As of model year 1993, all new Volvos use the environmentally friendly refrigerant R134a in their air conditioning systems."
Accepting the award for Volvo Cars of North America at the conference was William Shapiro, manager of regulations and compliance.
