VOLVO GRANTS $15,000 FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERNSHIP AT SHERCI

 WARRENSBURG, Mo., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Volvo's North American divisions recently provided a grant of $15,000 for continuation of the Volvo internship in safety, health and environmental affairs at Central Missouri State University. The internship has been funded by Volvo for the past two years. It is designated for public relations activities in the Safety, Health and Environmental Resource Center International (SHERCI) and is awarded to a graduate student in public relations. The award covers a stipend, tuition, books and public relations projects at SHERCI.
 SHERCI is being established at Central as a world-wide center that will offer research, retrieval and dissemination of information and resources for accident prevention, health issues and disaster relief. SHERCI's six purposes include:
 1. A worldwide retrieval center and network of safety, health and
 environmental resources;
 2. Provision of interdisciplinary research by international
 experts;
 3. On-site seminars, and registries of international conferences
 and seminars;
 4. Exhibits of technological and historical significance;
 5. Promotion of degree programs and careers in safety, health and
 environmental areas;
 6. Recognition of individuals who have made significant
 contributions to the fields.
 The resource center currently includes 59 cooperating organizations in 13 countries. It is under the direction of Robert L. Marshall, dean emeritus of public services at Central and president of SHERCI.
 Elizabeth Wazlawik, a graduate student in communication, has been the Volvo intern since March 1991. She has worked with Jim Dlugos, chairman of SHERCI's public relations committee, to bring worldwide attention to the facility and its purposes.
 In June 1991 legislation was signed by Gov. John Ashcroft which enables the Missouri General Assembly to construct a $7 million facility to house SHERCI at Central after July 1996.
