VOLKSWAGEN PREVIEWS V6 SEDAN THAT WILL APPEAR IN U.S. THIS FALL
NEW YORK, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen United States is previewing its new six-cylinder-equipped Passat GLX model for the first time in North America today at the New York International Auto Show. Volkswagen said the GLX model will be available for sale to the public this fall.
Following on the heels of the new 1992 Corrado SLC, the 1993 Passat GLX, a mid-size sedan, will become the second Volkswagen model powered by the German automaker's award-winning six-cylinder engine, called the VR6. Last year, Volkswagen received a Popular Science magazine "Best of What's New" award for the design and development of the VR6 engine, in recognition of its revolutionary design breakthrough that allows a six- cylinder to fit into virtually the same space as a standard four-cylinder engine.
"Like the Passat CL, GL and GL wagon, the GLX is a German driving sedan that is a triumph of substance over pretense," said Dave Schembri, director of marketing, VW/U.S. "It has been engineered for the driver enthusiast who needs to accommodate family or business but also wants the spirited performance of a true European sedan that is affordable."
The Passat's 2.8-liter VR6 engine produces 172 horsepower and is set in a zigzag fashion at 15 degrees under one cylinder head, unlike standard V6 engines where the cylinder banks are 60 or 90 degrees apart.
Along with the GLX, Volkswagen is also displaying the new VR6-equipped Corrado SLC, the fastest and most powerful VW production model ever offered, and the new 1993 EuroVan. The 178-horsepower SLC -- a sports luxury coupe -- can reach a top speed of 140 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 6.8 seconds. The EuroVan, a mid-size van with 35 percent more space than the average minivan, replaces the Vanagon model later this year.
