VOLKSWAGEN PREMIERES CONCEPT 1 IN DETROIT

DETROIT, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen today unveiled Concept 1 -- a vehicle designed at the German automaker's design studio in California -- at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The event marked the first time Volkswagen has internationally premiered a concept vehicle in the United States.
Concept 1 is unmistakably a Volkswagen, blending modern technology and design with the company's heritage of building simple, honest, reliable and original cars. A two-door entry-level vehicle, Concept 1 seats four adults and includes features such as dual airbags, ABS brakes, side impact protection and an automatic transmission.
"The intent is to emphasize the typical qualities of a Volkswagen," said Professor Ulrich Seiffert, member of the board of management responsible for research and development for the Volkswagen Group. "There are no unnecessary lines and shapes. The designers have chosen geometric elements and joined them in proportional harmony. It also features the technology of the future."
Concept 1 was designed at the Volkswagen of America Design Center in Simi Valley, Calif., which opened in 1991 and became the first VW design center outside of Europe.
The car has been described by its designers as a "back to the future" concept that dramatically updates the original people's car theme.
Company officials said it will show Concept 1 at the North American International Auto Show where it will gauge public reaction.
