VOLKSWAGEN BRINGS ITS ALL-NEW JETTA AND GOLF TO CALIFORNIA FIRST

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Calling it one of the most important new product launches in its history, Volkswagen United States today announced an exclusive California market rollout of its completely redesigned Jetta III and Golf III models.
Volkswagen also announced that both new models will be backed by a special customer care package, called Volkswagen Protection Plus, which includes, among other items, no charge for scheduled maintenance for two years and the industry's longest limited powertrain warranty at 100,000 miles or 10 years.
Historically, California is the No. 1 market for Volkswagens in the U.S., and its 85 VW retailers will be the first in the nation to begin selling these highly anticipated new models. The initial Jetta IIIs and Golf IIIs went on sale in San Diego earlier this month, and beginning this week they will be available at all Southern California Volkswagen retail facilities. The rest of the state receives these new models June 1, 1993.
The new Golf III's European counterpart is already the world's best- selling car model, with international sales of 1.4 million in 1992.
Volkswagen's Jetta is perennially the top-selling European nameplate sold in America.
"You don't change the best-selling European nameplates simply for the sake of change. Everything we've done has sought to make both even better," said Tom Shaver, vice president, VW/U.S. "The Jetta III and Golf III are totally new cars with bold changes, but they are designed to keep their basic promises and improve upon them: to be affordable, reliable, safe, and thoroughly delightful to drive."
Shaver said Volkswagen's advertising in the state will include television, radio and print, and will highlight the exclusive California rollout of the new models.
The completely redesigned Jetta III GL has a new aerodynamic style, a more powerful 2.0-liter, 115-horsepower fuel-injected engine with more torque, advanced safety engineering, improved handling and a new, more user-friendly interior.
Standard equipment for 1993 on both the Jetta III GL and Golf III GL includes an anti-theft alarm system, four-wheel-disc brakes, power central locking, power rack-and-pinion steering and folding rear seats. Both have added side-impact protection, a more substantial safety-cage construction and newly constructed front section that is designed to diffuse crash energy during an impact.
Later this year Volkswagen will also introduce the new Jetta III GLX, powered by a 2.8-liter VR6 engine that produces 172 horsepower.
The 1993 Volkswagen Golf III GL also arrives with more power under the hood, a fresh wind-cheating style, better handling characteristics, advanced safety engineering, and a new ergonomically designed interior.
Both the new Golf III GL and Jetta III GL will come standard with Volkswagen's Protection Plus. With this package, owners get a 10-year, 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, the longest offered by any car company in the U.S. The Protection Plus package also includes: complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years of 24,000 miles; a two-year roadside assistance program; six-year corrosion protection; and a comprehensive two-year, 24,000-mile, bumper-to-bumper limited warranty.
The manufacturer's suggested retail price on the 1993 Jetta III GL is $12,800, and the MSRP on the new 1993 Golf III GL is $11,600.
