VOITH OPENS RECYCLING TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN APPLETON

VOITH OPENS RECYCLING TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN APPLETON
APPLETON, Wis., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Voith, Inc. has officially

opened a recycling facility for the research, development and evaluation of new recycling technologies. Post-consumer waste paper grades will be an area of intense focus.
The Voith Recycling Technology Center, the only plant of its kind in the world, is now available for paper mill customers to develop process sequences for recycling their own custom grades of paper, some of which are not recyclable with current technology.
Voith, Inc. designed and built the center as a response to North America's increasing recycling needs, dwindling landfill availability, and growing overall environmental concerns.
"Wastepaper is constantly changing," said Werner Witek, vice president of the Voith Stock Preparation Division in Appleton. "New printing inks, coatings and processes require changes to existing recycling technology. The center allows Voith to demonstrate new techniques in recycling and provide answers to recycling issues and questions."
Paper mill customers will work together with the center's staff to test new deinking processes under realistic paper mill conditions. Results from these tests can be used to create customized deinking processes for specific waste paper grades.
The pilot plant has a production rate of 30 tons per day. After processing the waste paper, a clean pulp is produced which can be taken to the customer's paper mill for evaluation on their paper machines making their paper grades.
The center will provide information on pulp characteristics such as strength, energy requirements, yield and whiteness, as well as data to determine economic feasibility and overall environmental benefit. The customer will have the necessary information to design and construct their own customized recycling mill.
Increased paper recycling will contribute substantially to reducing landfill requirements as well as conserving energy and natural resources. Voith has been a major contributor in developing recycling solutions, a position that is further strengthened with the Recycling Technology Center.
Voith, Inc. is part of the Voith Group. The Voith Group is a worldwide manufacturer and marketers of paper machines, turbines, drive systems and is a world leader in deinking technology. The Voith Group is headquartered in Heidenheim, Germany.
