VOICE OF THE PEOPLE: Govt must get its house in order.

THE IRISH government is set to once again cash in on the housing boom this year.

It's estimated that a staggering 8.5 billion euro will go into the Government coffers from new homes being built here in 2006.

To break it down, experts estimate that over 100,000 euro or 40 per cent of the value of the average Irish home, will go to Bertie's Government.

That money will come from the building of over 86,000 new homes - up 6,000 on last year's numbers.

And all this comes at a time when the young people of Ireland are finding it increasingly difficult, in fact almost impossible, to get on the property ladder.

It is all very well that the money in the Government pockets is growing bigger by the week and month.

It is all very well that we have surplus cash revenue to spend on various projects.

But the bottom line is that young people today need a helping hand to get their lives off to a positive start.

And taxing them at every opportunity is just not the way.

The Government must bring in tax concessions for first-time buyers and builders - or face the roof collapsing on our young people.
