VOICE OF AMERICA TO AIR THIS YEAR'S MOONDOG CORONATION BALL AMERICA'S MUSIC TO THE WORLD

CLEVELAND, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- WMJI Radio and Canterbury Productions announces that the Majic Moondog Coronation Ball '93 to be held at Public Hall on March 20, will be broadcast around the world on the Voice of America (VOA). Total listenership potential is 100 million, over 200 countries in 49 languages.
The live concert will star: Carl Perkins, Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, and Frankie Lymon's Teenagers, all members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Also on the bill are The Shirelles, Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge, The Contours, The Skyliners, Jimmy Clanton, Barbara Lewis, The El Dorados, The Royal Tones and Stormy Weather.
Voice of America, a division of the United States Information Agency, will co-host the show with WMJI Radio. "It will be our first roots rock 'n' roll show," said Judy Massa, music director of VOA. "We are very aware of the popularity of this type of early rock for our audiences. Millions of young people throughout the world heard their first rock through the Voice of America," she said.
VOA officials coming to Cleveland for the concert will include Massa, Program Director Sid Davis and Rob McLean, a disc jockey for VOA Europe.
"People think of us as a news and informational program, but we do quite a bit of music as well," Massa said.
The show is a descendant of Alan Freed's "Moondog Coronation Ball" in Cleveland in 1952. Music historians document this to be the first rock 'n' roll concert ever held.
THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, ALSO LOCATED IN CLEVELAND (BREAKING GROUND THIS SPRING) WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT BY PRESENTING A SPECIAL RECOGNITION PLAQUE TO VOA AS WELL AS TO THE ARTISTS AT INTERMISSION.
