The market for mobile communications, although affected by the recession, continues to grow. The group is performing well and the results for the year should be good.
During September, Vodafone connected the 750,000 subscriber to its mobile telephone network and maintained its leadership with 56 percent of the UK market.
In October, Vodafone introduced an alternative tariff. This tariff, called "LowCall," offers reduced line rental costs with higher call charges and is of particular benefit to non business customers who make a low number of calls. The initial response has been very encouraging.
Vodafone's digital service, part of the pan-European network, opened on Dec. 1, 1991 and will cover 90 percent of the UK population by Spring 1993. The corresponding networks in the other major European countries are being implemented, thus providing the European community with the most advanced and versatile mobile communications system in the world. The network will provide a foundation for a digital Micro Cellular Network (MCN) which will be the next major innovation in mobile communications.
Capital expenditure in the UK this year will be in the order of $189,375,000 and in addition during the first half year the group has invested over $37,875,000 overseas, all financed from internally generated funds.
In August, a consortium, in which Vodafone Group Plc has a 45 percent interest, was awarded one of the two licenses to operate a pan- European mobile telephone service in Greece. The group now has interests in nine overseas mobile communications licenses and is actively seeking more.
An interim report will be sent to shareholders and copies will be available for the public on request from the company's registered office at The Courtyard, 2-4 London Road, Newbury, Berkshire, RG13 1JL.
Full accounts for the year to March 31, 1992, incorporating an unqualified auditor's report, have been filed with the Registrar of Companies.
