VMX ANNOUNCES FAX, E-MAIL PRODUCTS; INTEGRATED VOICE,
FAX, E-MAIL APPLICATIONS ON A SINGLE PLATFORM
SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- VMX (NASDAQ: VMXI) today introduced fax and e-mail products for its Integrated Voice Processing (IVP) platform. The new products are the latest elements of VMX's IVP strategy, intended to give users of touchtone telephones access to voice, data and image information in a single phone call.
VMX(R) platform users now have the option to add fax and e-mail applications to existing voice processing, call processing, interactive voice response (IVR) and audiotest applications. They can leverage their existing investment in voice processing, adding the new capabilities when they choose with only incremental investments, bringing all the benefits of a single platform architecture to the new applications.
"Our fax and e-mail products are unique because they are functionally integrated into our VMX 200/300 platform, and further demonstrate the versatility of our architecture," said Terri Brown, VMX group product manager. "The integration of these capabilities into a single voice processing platform has many distinct advantages over systems that feature separate voice and fax modules. The advantages include telephony grade reliability, lower support and maintenance costs because there are fewer points of failure and the ability to share system resources such as disk drives and universal voice ports," Brown added. "Even more important, external callers and internal users experience a truly 'seamless' session when interacting with the VMX system." Fax Mail Plus(tm) Software
VMX's new fax messaging capability, called Fax Mail Plus, is fully integrated into VMX's proven D.I.A.L.(R) voice messaging software, enabling users to access both voice and fax messages through a single "mixed media" mailbox. Fax Mail Plus has the same user interface as the voice messaging software, giving users "instant" familiarity with the application.
The single platform architecture of the VMX 200/300 gives callers a seamless experience when using Fax Mail Plus because they can request a fax document, leave a message for someone and transfer to a personal assistant all during the same phone call without being put on hold or disconnecting and redialing.
Fax Mail Plus software features three distinct capabilities: fax mail integration, fax overflow management and fax on-demand service. Fax Mail Integration
Fax mail integration allows users to receive, store and forward a fax the same way they receive, store and forward voice messages. Users control when and where to print faxed documents, and can attach voice comments to a fax document they are initially sending or forwarding. Users can be notified of new fax messages by a message waiting lamp, a pager or voice outcall. Fax messages are stored, along with voice messages, in the user's password-secured mailbox. Users who are traveling can be notified of a new fax by accessing their mixed-media mailboxes through any touchtone telephone, and they can direct the fax to be printed on a conveniently located fax machine. Fax Overflow Management
Fax overflow management prevents outside callers from receiving a busy signal or no answer (if the receiving fax machine is busy or out of paper) when attempting to send a fax to a company fax machine. If the intended fax machine is unavailable, the fax is automatically stored in an overflow mailbox for later delivery. Fax-on-Demand-Service
With the fax-on-demand service, callers can request the immediate delivery of printed information (stored in a VMX system mailbox) via fax at any convenient time of day or day of week, without the need for personal assistance. Fax Application Processor
Fax Mail Plus utilizes a multi-channel Fax Application Processor (physically integrated into the VMX platform), which is capable of sending and receiving faxes on any voice port. This allows users to avoid the unnecessary costs associated with dedicating ports to specific applications.
The Fax Application Processor is a multichannel (4 or 8 channels) fax processor designed by VMX for the VMX 200/300 platform. The fax processor supports communication with Group 3 fax machines and operates at transmission rates of up to 9600 baud. Up to six processors and 48 fax sessions can be supported by a single VMX system, and over 100,000 pages of fax information may be stored on VMX 200/300 system disks. Fax Application Processors are "hot-pluggable," and can be installed in any universal slot in the VMX system cabinet. e-Mailworks Application
The e-Mailworks(tm) application is prepackaged software that bridges the communications gap between integrated voice processing and e-mail systems. The application runs on the VMX platform, and enables e-mail users to see voice message information and voice mail users to hear e-mail message information. The application links the VMX platform with three of the most widely used e-mail systems -- IBM(R)PROFS, IBM OfficeVision and DEC(R) ALL-IN-1.
The e-Mailworks application gives users a single point of access for both voice and e-mail messages through one mixed-media mailbox. Message waiting notification and message header information are also provided. The application provides all these capabilities without requiring any modifications to the e-mail system that is being linked to the VMX platform, eliminating the requirement for host programming and shortening the time period needed for implementation.
From the VMX mixed-media mailbox, e-Mailworks users are given e-mail message counts and individual message header information when they enter their mailboxes. Similarly, e-mail users are notified of new voice messages, and given the option to read voice message header information from their existing e-mail mailbox.
The e-Mailworks application enhances employee communication and improves productivity by letting employees keep up to date on both types of messages through one system. Employees increase their productivity while traveling because e-Mailworks keeps them current on their e-mail messages from any touchtone phone. Pricing and Availability
Fax Mail Plus software will be available in the first quarter of 1993 in the U.S. and Canada, and is priced at $4,500. The software also requires a 4- or 8-channel Fax Application Processor, which is priced starting at $7,000. The e-Mailworks application software will be available in the fourth quarter of this year in the U.S. and Canada, and is priced at $15,000. The application requires VMXworks(tm) system software.
Worldwide distribution plans and pricing information will be available on a country-by-country basis beginning in the first quarter of 1993. Fax Mail Plus and e-Mailworks Demonstrations at Trade Shows
The Fax Mail Plus and e-Mailworks applications will be demonstrated at VMX's booth (Booth No. 502) at the TCA show in San Diego Sept. 22-24, and INTEROP 92 in San Francisco Oct. 26-30.
