VMARK Software and Data General enhance legacy access for client/server solutions.

WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 1995--In a move to provide customers with complete access to valuable corporate data, VMARK Software Inc. (NASDAQ: VMRK) and Data General Corp. (NYSE: DGN) today announced a joint project that will deliver a Micro Focus COBOL version of VMARK's HyperSTAR Server.

HyperSTAR is a data access middleware product based on object-messaging technology providing a simple solution for access to all types of corporate data. Release 3.0 of HyperSTAR, which includes the Micro Focus COBOL Server, is detailed in a separate announcement released by VMARK today.

The HyperSTAR Micro Focus COBOL Server product will allow users of Data General AViiON computer systems to simultaneously access information stored in COBOL files on the AViiON platform as well as existing data stored in other database systems such as Oracle, Sybase, uniVerse and DB2/MVS on other systems. As a result, customers can utilize and build client/server solutions with a single interface to data, regardless of its type or location.

The joint project continues a long-standing relationship between Data General and VMARK. Data General currently resells VMARK's uniVerse relational database management system throughout its worldwide sales channels and is one of its top resellers for uniVerse, VMARK said. Data General is the first worldwide reseller of the Micro Focus COBOL HyperSTAR Server product.

"By offering the Micro Focus COBOL HyperSTAR Server, we believe we can add significant value to our AViiON customers who are moving to client/server computing," said Daniel Sapir, vice president of strategic alliances for Data General.

"HyperSTAR will help our customers integrate existing COBOL files and data with either existing or planned client/server environments. This allows for a phased approach from legacy-based application rehosting to open systems while preserving their investment."

"With this agreement and today's newest release of HyperSTAR, VMARK and Data General will provide customers with standards-based technology as they move to open, client/server environments," said Peter L. Fiore, vice president of corporate marketing at VMARK.

Access to COBOL files

Addressing the need to access valuable corporate data maintained in COBOL systems, VMARK and Data General collaborated on the HyperSTAR Server for Micro Focus COBOL files - a key part of HyperSTAR Release 3.0. The HyperSTAR Server for Micro Focus files allows users to query COBOL data through any ODBC-compliant tool without rewriting COBOL programs - effectively preserving the existing COBOL environments. As a result, organizations do not have to re-engineer existing applications or build complex gateway layers to successfully implement corporate COBOL data into their client/server system.

The product also enables customers to integrate current COBOL solutions into new client/server applications built with application development tools such as Visual Basic, Powerbuilder and Object Studio - without modifying the current COBOL environment. End users can directly query and report COBOL data stored in file systems with front-end desktop applications such as Microsoft Excel and Cognos' Impromptu.
