VLASIC FOODS TO CLOSE PLANT IN CALIFORNIA

VLASIC FOODS TO CLOSE PLANT IN CALIFORNIA
CAMDEN, N.J., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Vlasic Foods, Inc. announced today it will close its pickle plant in City of Industry, Calif., in a continuing companywide cost-reduction effort.
The City of Industry plant employs 180 people. Severance benefits for hourly workers will be negotiated with local union representatives. Vlasic also will work with governmental officials to provide retraining and placement assistance to affected employees. Production at the plant will end on March 31.
Alfred Poe, president of Vlasic, said the closing was the latest step in a plant and business consolidation program that began in late 1987.
"If Vlasic is to remain competitive within its industry and in a tough global economy, it must relentlessly optimize productivity and remain the low-cost producer," Poe said. "By consolidating the production of this plant into other Vlasic facilities in North America, we are able to take a strong step in that direction."
The City of Industry Plant, which produces pickles, peppers and relish, was acquired by Vlasic in 1976.
Vlasic Foods is a wholly owned subsidiary of Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB). Campbell continues to operate seven other plants in California with a workforce totaling some 3,600 people who produce a wide range of products such as soup, pasta, spaghetti sauce, mushrooms, tomato paste, frozen foods and ripe olives.
