VITAL HEART SYSTEMS LAUNCHES EUROPEAN DISTRIBUTOR NETWORK

VITAL HEART SYSTEMS LAUNCHES EUROPEAN DISTRIBUTOR NETWORK
MINNEAPOLIS/BOSTON, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Vital Heart Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: VHRT) today announced an agreement in principle with Synectics, A.B. to distribute the SV 4000 Variance Cardiograph in the Scandinavian countries of Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
The agreement follows a presentation to leading Swedish cardiologists by Drs. Sylven and Nowak on Sept. 8, 1992, at Huddinge University Hospital of the Karolinska Institut. The Karolinska Institut, a prestigious research center and teaching university in Stockholm, Sweden, has been using variance cardiography to detect coronary artery disease (CAD) since 1990.
The Scandinavian distributorship is Vital Heart Systems' first step toward its previously announced intentions to establish a European distributor network this quarter. "We are pleased with the outstanding research and clinical validation performed at Karolinska Institut," said David L. Printy, chairman, president and CEO. "The high incidence of heart disease in Scandinavia and the need for cost containment within the national health care systems make this an exciting new market for our important technology."
Sylven and Nowak presented findings from their research using variance cardiography on Sept. 3, 1992, at the European Congress of Cardiology held in Barcelona, Spain. Their research indicates that the variance cardiograph is an efficient diagnostic method which compares favorable to exercise ECG for detection of CAD in a population with a high prevalence of heart disease. Combined results of the variance cardiograph and exercise ECG identify 93 percent of angiographically documented CAD cases. When the variance cardiograph and stress ECG results were combined, 96 percent of patients with reversible myocardial ischemia diagnosed by SPECT Thallium were identified.
Vital Heart Systems with offices in Beverly, Mass. and Minneapolis, manufactures and markets the Variance Cardiograph, a non-invasive, stress-free, diagnostic instrument to aid physicians in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. The stock of Vital Heart Systems, Inc. is traded on the national over-the-counter market under the NASDAQ symbol VHRT.
