VISTA BEATS EPA'S 33/50 TRI REDUCTION GOALS BY FOUR YEARS

HOUSTON, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently confirmed that by the end of 1991, Vista Chemical Company had achieved a 59 percent reduction in waste emissions for the priority chemicals targeted for the EPA's voluntary 33/50 Toxic Inventory Reduction program. As a result of some pollution abatement projects that were in progress at the time, Vista attained this 325,000 pound reduction less than six months after the start of the EPA program, thereby exceeding the EPA's total reduction goal and beating the program deadline by more than four years.
Under the EPA 33/50 program, companies were asked to reduce voluntarily the release of 17 chemicals by 33 percent in 1992 and by 50 percent by 1995, using 1988 SARA 313 toxic release data as the baseline. Vista either uses or produces eight of the 17 chemicals on the list. Vista's reductions result primarily from a $4.5 million dilution steam generator and process water stripper installed at the ethylene unit in Lake Charles, La., and an $11 million waste water pre-treatment system and benzene emission control system installed at Vista's Baltimore linear alkylbenzene plant.
"The Lake Charles and Baltimore pollution abatement projects contributed greatly to our reduction effort. However, the 59 percent reduction includes efforts from all of Vista's plants," said James R. Ball, Vista president and chief executive officer. "Vista's voluntary participation in this EPA program reflects our ongoing commitment to the principles and practices of the Responsible Care(R) program."
Vista is one of more than 1,100 companies participating in the 33/50 program. If all participating companies meet the program's goals by 1995, the U.S. industry would achieve a 354 million pound reduction in emissions.
