VISHAY INTERTECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES SPRAGUE TECHNOLOGIES ACQUISITION
CONTRIBUTES TO $.46 PER SHARE FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS
MALVERN, Pa., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Felix Zandman, chairman and chief executive officer, announced today that the recent acquisition of certain businesses of Sprague Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SPG) made a positive contribution to the first quarter earnings of Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH).
In the three months ended March 31, 1992, sales were $173,270,000 compared with $121,120,000 in the previous year's first quarter. Net earnings were $7,095,000 or $.46 per share compared with $6,922,000 or $.45 per share in the previous year's quarter.
Earnings per share is based on the weighted average number of common shares and dilutive common equivalent shares (from the assumed conversion of convertible subordinated debentures) outstanding during the period. Earnings per share for both periods reflects a 5 percent stock dividend paid on June 11, 1991.
Commenting on the results for the quarter, Zandman stated: "The increase in sales for the current quarter is a result of the acquisition of the worldwide tantalum capacitor and U.S. thick film network businesses from Sprague Technologies, Inc. as of January 1, 1992. The sales and earnings for the other Vishay resistor product businesses have improved from the three months ended December 31, 1991, but are somewhat lower as compared to the first quarter of last year due to the worldwide recession. However, we are pleased to report better than expected earnings from the acquired businesses of Sprague as a result of improved operating income primarily due to the reduction of sales and administrative expenses. In addition, we are planning for future reductions in manufacturing costs at Sprague by shifting some jobs to lower
labor cost areas. We are quite confident that the present operating income levels and previously mentioned cost reductions will enable the Sprague acquisition to be a major contributor to the profitability of the company in the future."
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. is a leading U.S. and European producer of a wide range of electronic resistors, resistive sensors and tantalum capacitors. It also is a major producer of other types of passive electronic components. The company's products are used in a broad range of industries.
