VISA TO SPONSOR 1994-96 OLYMPICS

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Visa's Olympic torch will burn for four more years, as Visa International today announced that it has signed an agreement with the International Olympic Committee to be a worldwide sponsor of the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway, and the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. The agreement is in cooperation with Atlanta Centennial Olympic Properties (ACOP), the Lillehammer Olympic Organizing Committee (LOOC) and the National Olympic Committees throughout the world, including the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).
A worldwide Olympic sponsor since 1986, Visa combined its marketing efforts with fund-raising programs for various national Olympic committees for both the 1988 Olympics and the 1992 Olympics. In addition to its worldwide sponsorship fees, the Visa fund-raising efforts in 1992 made significant financial contributions to Olympic hopefuls around the world. Visa plans similar fund-raising campaigns for 1994-96.
"Our association with the Olympics has been mutually beneficial, and we will continue our tradition of raising funds for athletes around the world," said Charles T. Russell, president and chief executive officer of Visa International. "Our sponsorship not only gives us an opportunity to express our commitment to the Olympic ideals, but it also enhances our image as a multi-domestic company."
Visa's 1992 Olympic sponsorship paved the way for many of its 19,000-member financial institutions to participate in the Olympics and utilize Olympic
marketing plans. Consumer research also showed that the image of the Visa brand was enhanced through the 1992 Olympic sponsorship.
Visa has also taken the lead in developing other meaningful Olympic programs around the world. In 1990, Visa developed the Gold Medal Athlete Program for the U.S.A./Visa Decathlon Team and the Visa-sponsored U.S. Ski Team. The program assembles the country's top coaches, physiologists, sports scientists and past U.S. Olympic gold medalists to provide personalized training and motivational support for U.S. Olympic hopefuls. In Europe, Visa created a program called Visa Olympic Art, which commissioned artists from five countries to create artwork about the Olympics. Visa exhibited the artwork during both the 1992 Winter Olympic Games and the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
Visa is the largest consumer payment card system in the world with more than 10 million acceptance locations and 296 million cards issued worldwide. Visa also has the leading global ATM network.
