VISA RAISES $4 MILLION FOR OLYMPIC ATHLETES WORLDWIDE
SAN FRANCISCO, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- By the close of the Summer

Olympics in Barcelona, Visa will have raised $4 million for Olympic athletes around the world through fund-raising promotions in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and other nations, the company announced today.
This amount is in addition to Visa's international sponsorship of the Olympics. Money raised through Visa's fund-raising programs will help Olympic hopefuls in their quest for gold medals at the Summer Games in Barcelona and will support athletes in the next Olympics.
For the past year, Visa U.S.A.'s fund-raising program "Pull for the Team" has made a contribution to the U.S. Olympic Team for each Visa card transaction and Visa travelers cheque purchase. Visa cardholders have also made donations directly to the Olympic Team by calling Visa's toll-free number, 800-VISA-USA, and using their Visa card to make contributions. Visa has promised a minimum of $2 million dollars to the U.S. Olympic Team from the program.
"We are heartened by the success of 'Pull for the Team' and by the number of calls coming in on our toll-free donation hotline," said John Bennett, senior vice president, Visa U.S.A. "People want to become a part of the Olympics, and this program lets them participate just by using their Visa cards."
In Great Britain, Visa has raised $1 million for the British Olympic Association (BOA) through its fund-raiser "Every Penny Counts." UK Visa cardholders donated a penny for each card transaction in March of last year to the BOA in support of British medal prospects in Barcelona. This fund-raising effort enabled Visa to donate more money to the BOA than any other Olympic sponsor.
By the close of the Summer Olympic Games, Visa Canada will have raised more than $250,000 for the Olympic Trust of Canada. Through Visa Canada Canadagrams(TM), Canadian cardholders could send personal messages of support to Canadian athletes as part of Visa Canada's Olympics Sweepstakes. For every Canadagram that was signed and sent, Visa Canada made a cash donation to the Olympic Trust. Visa Canada also sold official Olympic pins with a portion of the proceeds going to support Canadian Olympic athletes.
Visa helps athletes in other nations as well. Currently Visa has programs to raise funds for Olympic hopefuls in Australia, Ecuador, Brazil and Venezuela.
Visa has taken the lead in worldwide Olympic programs not only in fund-raising activities but also in the development of meaningful programs to enhance the performance of Olympic hopefuls. In sponsoring the U.S. Decathlon Team, Visa U.S.A. created in 1990 a training program called the Gold Medal Athlete program which provides personal coaching, motivational support from former Olympic gold medalists, and access to state-of-the-art equipment.
An Olympic sponsor since 1986, Visa is the world's largest consumer card payment system with more than 281 million cards issued, including 143 million in the United States.
