VIRGINIA POWER CUSTOMERS SET RECORD DEMAND

RICHMOND, Va., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Virginia Power's customers set an all-time record for peak electricity demand Thursday afternoon as the mercury soared to 100 degrees and above throughout much of the company's service area.
Demand by the company's 1.8 million customers reached 13,105 megawatts between 3 and 4 p.m. That surpassed Virginia Power's previous all-time peak of 12,942 megawatts, set July 14, 1992. One megawatt is 1 million watts, or enough power to light 10,000 100-watt light bulbs.
"Our generation system has performed well during this week of near- record and record demand," Larry W. Ellis, senior vice president-Power Operations and Planning, said. "The availability of all four of our nuclear units and all of our fossil-fueled units, has allowed us to meet customer demand and to sell power to neighboring utilities that need it."
Virginia Power customers also set a new 24-hour total summer energy output record of 258,968 megawatt-hours Thursday. The previous summer record of 249,578 megawatt-hours was set July 23, 1991. Total energy output, measured from midnight to midnight, is a measure of the energy consumed by the company's customers during a 24-hour period. The company's all-time 24-hour total energy output record is 273,566 megawatt-hours, set Dec. 22, 1989.
During hot humid weather, air conditioners must work harder to keep buildings cool, increasing the demand for electricity. The company estimates that 91 percent of its customers have some type of air conditioning. To help customers get more for their energy dollars, Virginia Power reminds them to conserve energy and use it efficiently whenever possible.
Today's weather forecast is nearly identical to yesterday's, and high customer demand is expected again today. Friday's demand is projected to be about 13,000 megawatts.
