VIRGINIA POWER ASKS TO BUILD CLOVER-CARSON TRANSMISSION LINE
RICHMOND, Va., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Virginia Power today filed an application with the State Corporation Commission for approval to build a 75.4-mile, 500-kilovolt transmission line from Halifax County to Dinwiddie County.
The transmission line is necessary to connect a coal-fired power station under construction near Clover in Halifax County to a 500-KV transmission substation near Carson in Dinwiddie county. If approved, the line would also cross Charlotte, Mecklenburg, Lunenburg and Brunswick counties.
The $72-million project will provide the path for electricity generated by the second 393-megawatt unit at Clover to get to Virginia Power's transmission grid, and from there to the company's 1.8 million customers. The second unit is scheduled to begin operating in the summer of 1996. Existing transmission lines will be able to carry the output of the first unit, which is set to begin generating electricity in the summer of 1995.
If approved, construction is scheduled to begin in 1994 and the line placed into service when the second unit begins operating in 1996. New right of way 150 feet wide is required for 74 miles of the proposed route; the remaining 1.4 miles will require an additional 125 feet adjacent to an existing transmission line. The company is planning to use steel lattice structures approximately 100 feet tall and 1,000 feet apart.
Virginia Power sponsored public workshops in Dinwiddie, Brunswick and Lunenburg counties. Approximately 100 residents attended and provided information that helped Virginia Power select a route that reasonably minimizes adverse impacts. Additional public meetings were held in Lunenburg and Dinwiddie counties.
People will have further opportunities to comment on the selected routes at public hearings scheduled by the SCC at a date to be determined. Construction will not begin until the commission approves the project.
