VIRGIN EARTHWINDS ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR AKRON LAUNCH

VIRGIN EARTHWINDS ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR AKRON LAUNCH
CLEVELAND, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by

Virgin Earthwinds:
Although surface conditions in Akron will appear to be perfect on Sunday night, Feb. 9, high amplitude wave wind patterns that the Virgin Earthwinds balloon would face in Europe do not fit the profile of acceptable weather.
"If we were to launch on Monday morning, there is a significant possibility that upon reaching Europe, we could be spun out of the upper air pattern toward the North Pole on the top side of a wave, and toward the Persian Gulf on the bottom side of a wave, regardless of our altitude," said Larry Newman, pilot.
As a result, no launch of the Virgin Earthwinds balloon will take place this weekend. There is no likelihood of a change in that condition in the upper atmosphere over Europe until the middle of next week.
"We are more anxious to get in the air than anyone," he said, "but we are more patient than anxious. We are ready to fly. But once we launch, there is no turning back. We can only fly this balloon once and we want to do it right. We will always opt to wait if the weather is not suitable."
Newman noted that the public inquiry lines have received thousands of phone calls asking about the status of the project and the anticipated date of the launch.
Newman said that an Earthwinds Update Hotline would be started on Monday to report information about the flight's status. The number, which costs $2 per call, is 900-446-2583.
"With so many calls coming in, it has become difficult for the staff at the airdock to conduct business. The Earthwinds hotline is the only suitable way to handle these calls," he said. Once the Virgin Earthwinds system launches, Newman will call in twice a day from the capsule to give in-depth information.
