VIRGIN ATLANTIC AIRWAYS OFFERS AVANT-GARDE PASSENGER SERVICES WITH HUGHES-AVICOM CAPABILITY

 GLENDORA, Calif., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Virgin Atlantic Airways has placed an order with Hughes-AVICOM International valued at approximately $19 million to outfit its fleet of aircraft with the Hughes subsidiary's fully interactive in-seat entertainment and communications systems.
 Hughes-AVICOM will install its leading edge, innovative systems in every seat of all classes of this airline's mix of Boeing 747 and newly acquired Airbus A340 aircraft. Introduction of the systems is scheduled for fall 1993.
 Virgin Atlantic is characteristically associated in the airline industry with offering the epitome of passenger service, comfort and enjoyment.
 The Hughes-AVICOM fully interactive communication system allows Virgin Atlantic passengers to choose a host of services including on- board duty free and mail order shopping, Super Nintendo video games, 20 channels of stereo CD-quality audio entertainment, 15 channels of movies and other video entertainment such as music videos, sports, documentaries, comedy, etc., destination city information and flight information ... all available via high-resolution video screens located in every console or seatback on the aircraft.
 Hughes-AVICOM President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Bertagna said, "It is rewarding when a sophisticated airline chooses our advanced equipment to assure that their passengers get the very best."
 Ultimately, the Hughes-AVICOM system offering will incorporate direct broadcasts from satellites to individual passenger screens on the aircraft. In-seat telephone service can be made available including fax and computer two-way links. Real-time stock quotes, cable television and live television broadcasts will be part of the radically new approach to inflight entertainment and information services.
 Hughes-AVICOM International, a subsidiary of GM Hughes Electronics, is a leading producer of integrated communications, entertainment and aircraft cabin management systems as well as airborne merchandising systems. The company has existing service bases in approximately 30 cities around the world.
