VIE DE FRANCE CORPORATION REPORTS PROFITABLE FIRST QUARTER RESULTS
MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Vie de France Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: VDEF) announced today the results of its first quarter of fiscal year 1993, which ended Sept. 19, 1992.
The company's consolidated sales increased 7 percent to $8,288,000 from $7,762,000 in the first quarter of the previous year. Net income was $19,000 (O cents per share), vs. a loss of $409,000 (-3 cents per share) for the first quarter of 1992.
Jean-Louis Vilgrain, chairman and chief executive officer, reported that the profit for the quarter resulted from increasing sales and profitability in the Restaurant Division, offset by losses in the Culinary Division. Significantly, consolidated loss from operations was reduced by 74 percent to $162,000 for the current quarter from $629,000 in the previous year first quarter. Non- operating income decreased by 18 percent, but at $181,000 was sufficient to offset the operating loss to turn the company profitable for the quarter.
Vilgrain noted that the positive results for the Restaurant Division were the main contributor to this quarter's profits. The division experienced gains in comparable store profits. In addition, the Restaurant Division, benefited from certain settlements in the legal and health insurance areas which boosted profits for the period. As a result, Vilgrain noted, the current quarter results may not be indicative of the full year operating results for the Restaurant Division. Sales in the Restaurant Division decreased by 2 percent to $6,544,000 in the first quarter of fiscal 1993 from $6,664,000 in the first quarter of the previous year. This decrease resulted primarily from the closure of three restaurant locations during fiscal year 1992. Sales from comparable continuing locations increased by 4 percent for the quarter over previous year first quarter levels. Vilgrain noted that the Restaurant Division has implemented new menus and promotions in an attempt to maximize sales this coming holiday season.
Sales in the Culinary Division continued to increase on a quarterly basis. Net sales reached $1,746,000 for the first quarter of fiscal year 1993, which was up by 53 percent over the previous year same quarter, with sous vide sales increasing by 98 percent over the previous year level. Vilgrain noted that sous vide sales continue to increase rapidly and that continued dramatic increases in sales volume are expected. Several new national customers have expressed intention to start purchases and are now in the menu development stage. With continued hard work for further sales growth at Culinary, Vilgrain said that he looks forward to continued progress for the Culinary Division.
The first quarter profits come after many quarters of disappointing results. With the continued innovation in the sous vide applications, and the continued growth in the Restaurant Division, Vilgrain expressed his confidence in the future success of Vie de France Corporation.
