VIDEO GAMES RATED NUMBER ONE IN NEW HIGH TECH SURVEY
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 34 percent of

all U.S. households with residents 18 years of age and older own and use video games, according to a new industry survey called "PC Watch."
Introduced in June, PC Watch is billed as the computer industry's first consumer tracking service, providing data on how people all across the country use their personal computers.
The survey, which interviewed 3,400 American households and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.7 percent, found that 34 percent of people questioned said they use a personal computer in work, school or at home.
According to Scott Johnson, president of Tech Scan, the company that conducted the survey, the initial results are not surprising.
"Thirty-four percent is a relatively high percentage of computer users, and that figure certainly comes as no surprise," he said.
"Computers have become a way of life for most families, and I think we'll see home use of personal computers grow even more in the future. Currently, 19 percent of households have computers in the home, even though some may be portables from work."
In addition, Tech Scan found the following high tech equipment in the homes of the respondents:
 -- Video games 34 percent
 -- Camcorders 21 percent
 -- Cellular telephones 15 percent
-- High density TVs 6 percent
 -- Projection TVs 4 percent
-- Electronic personal organizers 3.3 percent
 -- Home fax 3.2 percent
 -- Home copier 2.8 percent
 -- Satellite dish 2.7 percent
Paul Strasser, chairman of Tech Scan and its parent company, MSI International, based in Philadelphia, said PC Watch will provide much more relevant data related to how consumers use and think about their PCs.
"We created PC Watch because the industry said there was a real need to learn about consumers' usage of their computers, and this will help manufacturers better satisfy them in the future," Strasser said.
"This is the very beginning of how we'll monitor PC usage and we're now working on other surveys which will delve deeper into areas such as consumer preferences, software applicability and future products and services."
Strasser said the first comprehensive data from PC Watch will be available to subscribers in the fall. To obtain information, a toll- free number is available, 800-769-5525.
