VIASOFT, INC. NAMED IBM AD CYCLE INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE MEMBER

VIASOFT, INC. NAMED IBM AD CYCLE INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE MEMBER
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced an alliance with VIASOFT, Inc. that will help customers redevelop large, complex software systems into new applications and simpler systems that are easier and less expensive to maintain.
VIASOFT, a software developer based in Phoenix, was named an IBM International Alliance Member for AD/Cycle(A), IBM's framework to speed and simplify application development. As an AD/Cycle alliance member, VIASOFT will play a key role in IBM's application development strategy, focusing on system redevelopment. IBM will market VIASOFT's Existing Systems Workbench(B) products under its Cooperative Software Marketing Program and provide specialized redevelopment consulting services.
IBM will continue to work closely with the other members of the International Alliance for AD/Cycle to extend AD/Cycle offerings for software redevelopment. Bachman Information Systems, Inc., INTERSOLV, Inc., and Micro Focus have key AD/Cycle products for maintenance and reengineering. In addition, today IBM and KnowledgeWare, Inc. said an Operating System/2(A) (OS/2)(A) 2.0-based tool set for program understanding and maintenance would become part of AD/Cycle.
Together, tools provided by IBM, VIASOFT and other alliance members can provide the means to simplify the maintenance of old, complex, often technically outdated legacy systems, thus freeing resources for new information services initiatives. Maintenance of legacy systems currently ties up 60 to 80 percent of information systems resources, hindering efforts to streamline systems and develop new applications, industry consultants agree.
In redevelopment, large, complex systems may be analyzed, restructured and broken into smaller, simpler systems that are easier for programmers to understand and maintain. In addition, during the process business functions can be extracted that can be used in the design of other new applications.
"Providing a means to upgrade and migrate large, legacy systems to new technologies can reduce the cycle time for bringing new systems on line," said Catherine J. Lewis, director of Application Development Marketing, IBM Programming Systems. "This alliance, along with IBM's and other IAMs' products and services, create a total offering for redevelopment and allow our customers to focus their resources on applications that can enhance business performance."
VIASOFT joins Bachman, Digitalk, Inc., Easel Corp., INTERSOLV, KnowledgeWare, Micro Focus and SYNON Inc. as AD/Cycle International Alliance Members. AD/Cycle is an open framework through which IBM and its partners provide products that help automate and improve quality and management of the application development process, resulting in faster development with fewer errors.
The VIASOFT redevelopment products run on the Multiple Virtual Storage and OS/2 operating systems. They are also available as MVS-only versions.
The following VIASOFT products will be available July 17 from IBM: VIA/Insight(B), VIA/SmartDoc(B), VIA/Renaissance(B), VIA/SmartTest(B) and VIA/Smart/Edit(B). ViaRecap(B), as well as the versions of these products to be run on OS/2 workstations, will be available on a later schedule. Prices vary according to processor size.
IBM's AD/Cycle Redevelopment Strategy and Products
IBM's AD/Cycle(A) Redevelopment Strategy is composed of five stages, each supported by products from IBM, VIASOFT, Inc. and other members of the International Alliance for AD/Cycle. They are:
 Inventory Analysis:
The stage in which an enterprise's applications are prioritized, analyzed for complexity and quality and an inventory of application components is compiled using:
 -- IBM's COBOL Structuring Facility
 -- IBM'S SAA(A) AD/Cycle Dictionary Services/MVS
 -- VIASOFT'S VIA/Recap(B) and Recap2(B)
 Application Understanding:
The stage in which the relationships of programs within an application are illustrated so that the impact of major changes can be understood.
 -- IBM's SAA AD/Cycle FastRef/2
 Program Understanding:
The stage in which the control, logic and data relationships within a single program are illustrated using:
 -- INTERSOLV's Design Recovery Series(C)
 -- VIASOFT'S VIA/Insight and VIA/Insight2(B)
 -- VIASOFT'S VIA/SmartDoc and VIA/SmartDoc2(B)
 Reengineering:
The stage in which program changes are made that lengthen the life of legacy systems, while maintaining their original function using:
 -- Bachman(D)'s Reengineering Product Set
-- IBM's CICS COBOL Conversion Aid
 -- IBM's COBOL Structuring Facility
 -- VIASOFT's VIA/Renaissance and VIA/Renaissance2(B)
 Reverse Engineering:
The stage in which programs are elevated, from both a logic and data standpoint, to a higher level of abstraction, allowxDing the programmer to use Upper CASE modeling, analysis and design, and generator tools to forward engineer enhancements in the legacy code using:
 -- BACHMAN(D)'s Catalog Extract
The AD/Cycle Redevelopment Strategy supports language migration efforts. For example, reengineering and reverse-engineering can simplify and speed migration of old applications to new language and execution environments such as IBM's AD/Cycle Language Environment/370(A) and AD/Cycle Cooperative Development Environment/370. In addition, the IBM test products, Software Analysis Test Tools and SAA AD/Cycle Workstation Interactive Test Tool, can be used in redevelopment.
The AD/Cycle Redevelopment Strategy is further enhanced by application redevelopment consulting services which are available now.
