VIACOM KEEPS FOX IN CABLE LINE-UP

PLEASANTON, Calif., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Viacom Cable announced it has reached an agreement with the Fox Broadcast Network to continue carrying Fox programming on all Viacom cable systems nationwide. "We are very pleased that our first agreement with a major network has worked out so well, especially for our viewers," said John W. Goddard, senior vice president of Viacom International Inc. and president and chief executive officer of its Cable Division.
Negotiations between cable operators and local commercial broadcasters are required by the 1992 Cable Act when a broadcaster chooses to exercise its "retransmission consent" rights instead of "must carry" status. As part of the agreement, Viacom will carry Fox's new national cable programming service, in addition to local Fox affiliated broadcast television stations.
"We are continuing to meet with the other local television stations in all of our markets, and we expect to announce additional successful agreements in the near future," Goddard added.
Viacom Cable, a division of Viacom International Inc., owns 13 cable television systems in five states, serving more than one million customers.
