VHA ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN, BOARD MEMBERS
ORLANDO, Fla., April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Voluntary Hospitals of

America Inc. (VHA), the nation's largest alliance of not-for-profit hospitals and multihospital systems, today announced the election of a new board chairman and four new members of the board.

Hansberger served as a member of VHA's interim management team during the company's reorganization in 1988, and has been a member of the VHA board since Jan. 1, 1987.
Hansberger succeeds Gordon M. Sprenger, president and CEO of VHA Shareholder LifeSpan Inc., parent corporation of Abbott-Northwestern Hospital and five other hospitals in Minnesota. A member of VHA's board since the alliance was founded in 1977, Sprenger was named VHA's chairman in October
1988. He will remain on the board.
The new directors include: A.T. Blackshear, managing partner, Fulbright & Jaworski, a law firm in Houston; Paul M. Ellwood, M.D., chairman of InterStudy, Excelsior, Minn.; Michael Weidner, president and CEO of Highland Hospital of Rochester, (N.Y.), a VHA Partner hospital; and Paul M. "We have now broadened our constituency to include an executive from a VHA institution that does not hold shareholder status, and a physician from outside the VHA system," said C. Thomas Smith, president and CEO of VHA. The VHA board previously consisted of chief executive officers of VHA Shareholder hospitals with 'outside' directors joining the board in 1987.
Blackshear is managing partner and chairman of the executive committee of Fulbright & Jaworski. He has extensive experience in tax law, general business and the health care industry. Blackshear joined Fulbright & Jaworski in 1969 and served as partner-in-charge of the law firm's Dallas office from 1989 to 1991.

He is clinical professor of pediatrics, neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, where he founded the program in pediatric neurology. Ellwood is the first recipient of the U.S. Healthcare Quality Award for his outstanding contributions to the improvement of quality health care in the United States.

He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves as chairman of VHA Upstate New York, one of VHA's 29 Regional Health Care Systems.
