VF CORPORATION REACHES UNPRECEDENTED ANNUAL SALES
SALES TO REACH $3 BILLION BY END OF OCTOBER 1992
WYOMISSING, Pa., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- VF Corporation (NYSE: VFC), one of the world's largest publicly held apparel manufacturers, will reach three billion dollars in 1992 sales by the end of October, a major milestone for the company said President, CEO and Chairman of the Board, Lawrence R. Pugh. This surpasses the total year-end revenue of $2,952 billion VF reported for 1991 -- previously its best year.
"This tremendous growth is primarily driven by increased until sales at our existing companies -- a significant achievement considering the sluggish state of the U.S. economy. We are selling more because our casual, basic and basic fashion apparel is aligned with the needs and values of the American consumer of the 1990's," Pugh said.
Pugh attributed VF's ability to reach these consumers to the company's Market Response System (MRS) and the strong partnerships its divisions have cultivated with key retailers. MRS is an integrated business system that allows VF to bring new products to market more quickly, while significantly cutting restocking cycle times, reducing inventories and lowering costs.
"MRS is definitely working, but it is not enough by itself," continued Mr. Pugh. "It is the employees who make the difference. In fact, to keep up with consumer and retailer demands, we've hired some 3,600 additional employees in the United States since Jan. 1992 with the vast majority in production jobs in our plants."
VF companies JanSport, Lee, Wranger, and Marithe & Francois Girbaud have enjoyed outstanding sales during the first six months of 1992. Bassett-Walker, which manufactures fleecewear under the Lee label, is seeing significant increases during this latter half of the year, as compared to the same period in 1991. Also notable is the improvement in sales and return to normal levels of profitability at Vanity Fair, as compared to 1991.
Mr. Pugh said, "VF Corporation adheres closely to a brand strategy -- it creates and markets apparel with trusted labels. This strategy is working at all of our divisions and is, in some cases, allowing us to enter new areas. For example, our Lee and Wrangler divisions have gained significant sales by expanding their brands to include shirts, casual pants and more."
"VF is also benefiting this year from increases in sales abroad -- an area the company has been aggressively expanding over the last several years through internal growth as well as acquisitions in the apparel sector," Mr. Pugh said.
VF Corporation is an international apparel company headquartered in Wyomissing, Pa., and is a leader in the jeanswear, activewear, intimate apparel and occupational apparel markets. Its principal brands are Lee, Wrangler, Rustler, Marithe & Francois Girbaud, Bassett-Walker, JanSport, Jantzen, Vanity Fair, Vassarette, Barbizon, Red Kap, WorkWear and Healthtex. In 1991, VF ranked 152nd in Fortune's "500 Largest U.S. Industrial Corporations."
