VERNER LIIPFERT EXPANDS TEXAS OPERATIONS; WASHINGTON FIRM ADDS ATTORNEYS TO HOUSTON OFFICE; PLANS NEW OFFICE IN DALLAS

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand, headquartered in Washington, today announced a major expansion of its presence in the state of Texas. This includes the addition of a nationally recognized bankruptcy and debt restructuring group and an international trade attorney to its Houston office and future plans to open an office in Dallas.
Seven bankruptcy attorneys, headed by Lenard M. Parkins, formerly shareholders with the Houston firm of Sheinfeld, Maley & Kay, P.C., will join the Houston office effective Feb. 1. The group also includes John F. Higgins, John P. Melko, Kyung S. Lee, Patrick L. Hughes, Anne M. Ferazzi and Keith D. Spickelmier.
Montgomery Hoyt, formerly a partner in Baker & Botts' Houston office, will also be joining Verner Liipfert. Hoyt specializes in international trade law.
"We are extremely pleased to have these outstanding lawyers join us," said Berl Bernhard, chairman of Verner Liipfert. "In addition to greatly expanding the capabilities of our Houston office, the addition of these partners enables us to expand our strategic services at a time when more corporations are seeking assistance on debt restructuring and cost control.
"We are equally enthusiastic about the strengthening of our international transactions and trade practice," Bernhard said. "Mont Hoyt is one of the country's leading experts in the commercial implications of NAFTA, particularly as it will relate to Texas.
"These strong additions to our firm will enhance our ability to service our clients in Texas and elsewhere," said Bernhard.
Verner Liipfert has strong ties to Texas. The firm was among the first Washington-based law firms to establish a Texas office. Name partner Harry McPherson served as counsel to the president under Lyndon Johnson. Lloyd Hand, former chief of protocol with rank of ambassador, also served under President Johnson. Both McPherson and Hand are graduates of the University of Texas Law School.
"We are excited to be part of this dynamic, growing law firm," said Parkins. "Verner Liipfert will give us substantially expanded capability to handle the broad range of issues typically faced in restructuring and bankruptcy matters. At the same time, we will miss the daily contact with our friends at SM&K, but we are confident that SM&K will continue as a strong and outstanding law firm."
Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand was founded in 1960 by James M. Verner, formerly a senior official of the Civil Aeronautics Board, and Berl Bernhard, who later was appointed by President Kennedy to serve as staff director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. With the addition of these new attorneys, the firm will have nearly 150 lawyers. Its principal offices are in Washington and McLean, Va., in addition to its Houston office.
